Policies and Procedures

Student Access to the library:

All students entering the library before or after school, during the school day with a hall pass or from study hall, must sign in on the laptop computer at the Circulation Desk by typing their name and the name of the teacher to whose class they are assigned that period. No teacher's name is required before and after school. They must also sign out during the school day if leaving the library before the bell rings.  All book bags are to be left on carts at the library entrance.

Before and after the school day:

The library is open for 30 minutes before and after school on regular school days. Students are welcome to visit the library during that time.  After the first two weeks of school, there are no after school hours when school is dismissed before 2:45 p.m..

During Rocket Academy:

Students may use the library during Rocket Academy as long as they sign up (in the library) before school on that day.  They may also sign up the day before.  Rocket Academy teachers are notified before class and students are to report to the library instead of to their Rocket Academy on that day.

From study hall:

Students may spend one study hall period per day in the library. In order for a student to use the library during study hall, they must follow these procedures:
  • Come to the library before the 7:40 a.m. bell, or the previous day, and request to be signed up to go to the library instead of to study hall on that day
  • Report directly to the library instead of to study hall
  • Be prompt. A student arriving after the bell rings will lose their library privileges for that day and must return to study hall.
  • Print name in sign-in notebook at the circulation desk in the library
  • Stay in the library for the entire period. No passes will be issued from the library back to study hall.
Library staff will let the study hall teacher know who has arrived in the library each hour. The study hall teacher will keep attendance.

From the classroom:

Teachers are welcome to send individual students to the library with a planner or LCHS hall pass. An explanation of the purpose of the visit should be written on the pass or conveyed to the librarian through a phone call. Unless otherwise requested by the teacher, the student will be expected to remain in the library until the end of the class period. If a teacher wants more than one student to visit the library at the same time, the teacher should call the librarian to be sure that the library can accommodate those students at that time.

Classes in the library:

  • Teachers are encouraged to hold classes in the library to use library materials
  • Library reservation requests should be made directly with the librarian
  • The librarian will assist teacher in preparing students for research
  • With prior notice, specific materials can be made available for assignments
  • When an assignment involves substantial computer use, class should be scheduled in one of the computer labs
  • The library is a "last resort" computer lab

Check-out procedures:

In order to check out a library book a student must:
  • Take book(s) to Circulation Desk
  • Give book(s) and student ID to library staff
  • Be aware of due date stamped in book
  • Return or renew book(s) by due date

Due Dates:

Books will be due 2 weeks from the Friday of the week they are checked out.

The following exceptions apply at the end of each school year:

Seniors: Last due date for library materials will be in April. Any materials not returned by that date will be added to the student’s account as an obligation.

Underclassmen: Last due date will be one week prior to Final Exams.

Restrictions on checking out library materials:

Students with overdue library books from the current school year or from previous school years will not be allowed to check out additional materials until those overdue books are returned or replacement cost has been paid.

Overdue notification:

Students with  overdue library books from the current school year or from previous school years  will not be allowed to check out additional materials until those overdue books are returned or replacement cost has been paid.

Book Replacement Charges:

Students who do not return library books will be charged the replacement cost plus a processing fee of $2.00 for each unreturned book. Those charges will be sent to the Business Office, as a student obligation, at the end of each semester.

Computer use in the library:

Computers may be used to locate library books in the automated card catalog, conduct research for school, and to type school assignments.

Internet access: Before using the internet, a student must have an LCHS Internet Agreement form signed by a parent or guardian on file in the Dean's Office.

Interlibrary Loans:

Books and copies of magazine articles not available in our library may be requested from another library. It may take two weeks or more for those materials to reach our library.

See the librarian for details.

Audiovisual materials and equipment:

Videotapes and DVDs are available for teachers to borrow as needed. They are shelved in a room next to the Teacher Resource Room and are arranged in Dewey Decimal System order.

The videos/DVDs are a part of our library's collection so they can be located in the library catalog that may be accessed through the library web page. All videos/DVDs must be checked out at the circulation desk.

Teachers may reserve audiovisual equipment by e-mailing or calling the library staff prior to the date needed. Unless notified otherwise, the equipment will be available for teacher to pick up on the day needed.  Equipment is not checked out to students.

Transparency sheets are provided for teachers by the library. Teachers may make transparencies on the photocopier in the Teacher Resource Room. Only the blank transparencies provided by the library should be used in the photocopier.

Laminating is done for teachers once a week. Materials to laminate should be labeled with teacher's name and room number and left on the table by the laminator.  Items left by noon on Thursday will be available to be picked up after noon on Friday.

The photocopiers and digital duplicator located in the Teacher Resource Room, are maintained by library staff. The duplicators are designed to reproduce multiple copies of plain text. They should be used for making at least 100 copies or more of a one-sided original sheet with plain text.

The photocopy machine may be used for 1 to 100 copies of an original document. This is especially useful when collating and stapling is needed.

Library staff should be notified when there are any problems with the Teacher Resource Room copy machines.
